BASSIST CARL MAYOTTE UNVEILS « BOBIL », A GROOVY-FUSION TRACK

Following the release of his latest album, Claude, last March, jazz fusion bassist Carl Mayotte returns with “Bobil.”

His latest album was conceived as a tribute to his late father, with each track reflecting a happy memory they shared. However, there was one final memory the composer wanted to bring to life through music, but hadn’t had time to complete for the album. That’s how “Bobil” came to be.

The title refers to a beloved ice cream shop in Québec City that was open for more than 73 years and that Carl’s father used to take him to as a child. These outings were often an excuse for long drives through the city streets, filled with laughter and shared moments of connection. Of all his childhood memories, these remain among the musician’s most cherished.

To capture this memory in music, Carl crafted a groovy fusion track with a playful energy reminiscent of the world of Mario Kart, evoking the feeling of a carefree drive. The heavily syncopated verses suggest the lively, spontaneous movement of the ride, while an almost epic-sounding chorus emerges to highlight the emotional significance of this special moment. “Bobil” also puts guitarist Gabriel Cyr in the spotlight, delivering a fiery solo and masterfully navigating the track’s winding melody. It’s an especially touching tribute, as guitar was Carl’s father’s favourite instrument.
